I was in Amherst for business, so took scenic (Rt 9) route east to get in first fishing excursion of the year on the Swift. Here's my report:

Weather - gray, windy, COLD
Water - High, fast, COLD
Fish observed - 3 rises
Fish caught - none
Flies lost in trees - 1
Flies previously lost in trees by other retrieved by me - 2 (net of +1 flies)
Other fisherman observed -
1 bait/spinning fisherman below Rt 9
0 fly-fisherman above Rt 9
Fly-bys - 2
1 turkey crossing Y-pool at altitude of 5 feet, landing with a crash 10' from me
1 fighter jet overhead at about 500 (?) feet - below clouds anyways - didn't see it land, with a crash or otherwise
Fauna observed - 1 beaver in Y-pool. (See turkey above)
Leaks in waders so far this year - 0 - gotta love AquaSeal!
Potential frostbite spots on hands - 5

That is all.

You want to drift the Swift river? (#$119)

I can understand thinking about drifting the Swift, it is running at 661cfs today, might be the only way to fish it. This river has been running high all winter.

Might be middle of May before you can wade it.

I've noted the high flows....it's pretty much been 200+ (or ++) cfs since december. Anyone has any idea why? I don't think it has rained very much or that we had that much snow...? Are they trying to drain the Quabbin?
