I read in OTW today that BioWand smelt flavor works well for lakers, no doubt. I used to use Mike's florescent smelt oil for years, but can't find it any more.
Are there any other scents that work well w/ lakers?
I know people that swearer by anise, and I have used other scents....Dr. Juice used to make a laker scent, garlic etc.
What's your choice?

Never used it. Do you dip your flies in it or spray it on?

The OTW stuff is like chap stick, rub a little on. But I guess you don't need it for those offshore lakers in FL. --125-3

Funny, I was looking for some scent for the resy at B&A yesterday....but all I saw was Berkley on the shelf. The stuff OTW talks about must be hidden somewhere else!

I have used the hogy menhaden and smelly jelly.

When jigging, I think scents are good because I stick to an area for a while. I don't know that it matters which one you use, but for metals I prefer jelly, plastics oil, like the Hogy stuff.

Problem is, trying to find that stuff? You would thing it would be logical to have smelt flavor @ Wachusett, or herring @ the canal in May....
Fat chance finding it when you need it (as usual in MA)!

Bill,

All kidding aside, I'll bet any sort of bottled fish scent will work. Lakers eat pretty much everything, so anything that emits oil and smells like food should attract lakers. Once they come to your area, than it's up to you to catch them though.;)

That's what I think....lakers are more smell related that other trout. I was just wondering how many people were using strange things like garlic, anise or pheromones for lakers, and there results?

By the way, Cabela's has BioEdge, for those who want to mail order....

As for myself, I just put whatever I buy that year in my old bottle of Mike's florescent smelt oil (I like that bottle)....it has Dr. Juice, Smelly Jelly, Power Bait, Gravy, and others mixed in....haven't tried YUM or Bang yet.

I wouldn't go crazy on the specific flavors. I use menhaden in fresh and salt. I don't know how much it helps with lakers, but having double digit outings isn't unusual when jigging from the kayak.

Personally I have been trying garlic scents a lot for lakers (& other trout/salmon) the last few years. No big difference?

Another aspect is liquid vs. paste type scents? On spoons & shiners?

And water soluble vs. oil based attractants?
I find that oil based liquids ends up on the surface after the first cast.

I came up empty for lakers at the 'Chu on Sat. First time in the last four outings I didn't get any. I guess I should have brought that leftover garlic in the fridge.

Bait guys were getting a few though...
