I'll be at st john the 1st week of May with the family (wife+2 boys 3,8), based at Maho bay but will rent a jeep for the week. I'd like to wet a line w/o abandoning the family if possible. I will probably rent a kayak for a couple of the days. Can anyone help me out with suggestions, fly or spin? PM me if your worried about spot burning. Thanks!

If you do some research on google, there's a flat near the old mill on the north central side of the island. It's not a big area but there are bones there. You'll likely also run into other fly fisherman as the flats fishing is limited so guys end up in the same place. Try google maps and you'll see it as well.

I think that area is called Annaberg....north side of the Island.

The Annaberg Ruins are about 15 minutes from the Maho Bay Campground. There are some bones, some snook, tarpon, jacks, snapper, etc.
I was there in 2001, so things are probably much different, but I saw plenty of bones on the flat to the west of the parking lot- but they are pressured and very skittish. I did get one bone blind casting in a channel.
If I had a yak- I would concentrate on the back end of the bay along the mangroves- except for a couple of guides it never gets fished I would bet. Google earth will show you what you need to know.
If you do a search on here about St. John, you'll find plenty of old posts, including mine from right after I got back. Have Fun- awesome place.:-%

Yep, that's it, Annaberg ruins. The flat isn't large but there are bones and they are pressured so you need some good skill and luck. If I remember correctly, there are some coral heads or reef that you can reach at the end of the flat going out towards the bay. You might throw some clousers around there and get snappers/jacks.
If you're on a sailboat, keep an eye out for birds crashing bait in the bays. I got into some 60+ lb tarpon fishing deep clousers in an area on Tortola.
Here's one in mid flight that I had to fight on a 9 wt.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will definitely try the flats area, and will also be renting a kayak here and there. Hopefully, I will hook something...
