Thank you all for the responses to my last post. Very helpful. To be more specific, I have an 8' fly rod...says on the rod, "line size 8"...I just need to know how to set up the reel basically. If i get #8 floating line, 150-200 yds. of #30 dacron backing, and a leader, will this do? I'm new to the sport of fly fishing and just want to hit the water w/out too much complication. Striper season just opened and i am anxious to get going. Need instruction for the actual rigging. Thanks.
I would go with an 8-weight intermediate line. This will be an all around general purpose line. I like the Rio Striped Bass line http://www.bearsden.com/product500.html. Bring your reel to a fly shop and have them spool it up with the line and 30# backing. The shop will put on enough backing to properly fill the spool. 200 yards is fine 95% of the time. The remaining 5% makes for great stories about getting "spooled"!!!!
