Yup---our razor clams are literally the size of a straight razor's blade and pretty much only good for bait.
We're also not allowed to dry dig (or wet dig, for that matter) with shovels.

Nice nice and so yummy on the plate. We have a good supply of them in Barnstable harbor. But their slimmer body makes them faster in our softer sand. And they don't always dig straight down, they can go off to the side quickly at what seems like a 90 degree angle. They are very sweet tasting when you get a batch. I have not tried frying them since they are tasty enough steamed.

Razor clams are delicious, but something tells me Peter's not talking about the kind of razors we have here on ol Cape Cod?:brow

They are great eating and there is a big market for them in New York City.I have a close friend who made good living harvesting them in Pleasant Bay almost year round, but the Ribbon Worm came and that was the end of them.

Interesting. I grew up summers in Orleans and knew what we cal Razor clams. They are 6" long and less than an inch across and their hinge runs down almost the full length of the 6"s. Recently (this year and last) I have found one of the Pacific Razor clam shells in Quanset Pond (on Pleasant Bay). I did not recognize them and my father, who has 60 years on the same beach, did not recognize them either. I saved the one this year because I wanted to ask a friend what it was...now I know (I will have to see if he knows as well). It is still close to 6" long but more like 1.5-2" across and the hinge is just in one spot on the long side (it does not run the length)...I thought it was some sort of a Hybrid between a Razor Clam and a Steamer (it actually looks like an elongated and squared off steamer to me)...Thanks for the pics.

Wonderful pics, as usual, Doc. A bud gifted me left coast crab and razors as a thanks for me bringing out bugs from here on a WA duck hunt (yes, that disaster). Ended up making linguini with the razors, and it was excellent. Pic's lousy, but man did the meal eat well.

Thanks for sharing. BTW, nice action pic of the dog getting shot. Can't blame you, though. I didn't see it dig a single clam! ;)
