So, I'm looking to spend a week in either place, 5 days fishing.

Obviously there are some stellar reports from Placencia on here, and I truly want to chase permit, but I am going with some moderately experienced folks who may not want to stomach a 45 minute ride to the flats every day, each way.

If Ambergris is more straightforward and still offers shots at tarpon and permit, maybe its the better option?

Any info is defintely appreciated.

Bonefish are still there - saw em & caught em.
I do believe the bonefishing is better around Turneffee and north compared to the South.

Maybe he was referring to no bonefish aroun Tobacco?

Yo
Spent some time in Placencia in June there are very few bones there
The permit fishing was not to bad and could have been a lot better with better tides. And a lot less wind.Did get into some good tarpon. The town is great little place' good food, lodging and plenty of good guides.
Just be ready for a ride to the flats 45min to an hour can be a pain in the back when the wind is up.

So far, 2 trips to Placencia, $ willing, there will be a third. If you have the right guide, the 1st permit spot is 10 minutes at most from the town dock. You will get 10 to 30 permit shots a day, everyday, catching them is always a bit more challenging. Also, there are plenty of bones around, and they are easy, but small. Tarpon, yes, but they do move around. When are you going? There is a major flats tounament in Belize this month, that should tell you something. Send me a PM if you want more.
