Any recommendations for a guide in the San Juan lagoons or the northeast side of the island? I will be in San Juan on business with a free morning in mid=June. Had great advice for a previous trip in the Caribbean from the board.

Many thanks.

Try Capt. Gregg McKee. Wildfly Charters, Vieques (787)435-4833. I fished with him a few times when he was guiding in the Keys and he was a good guide. He moved to P.R. about 7 years ago and I keep wanting to go down and check it out.

Maybe you can give us a report when you get back.

If you are looking to fly fish then book Capt.Omar Orraca of Caribbean Outfitters but you better call today as he books up early. There is another local less known guide who is supposed to be great, can't recall his name but contact Capt. Franco flyfish@coqui.net over on Vieques he knows many of the Good locals over in San Juan he would happy to help, tell him I said "hi"

June is a good time to be there but San JUan is not the best place in PR to fish by any means, it's not your typical tarpon fishery...it's primarily done in the lagoons in real cloudy water, the only sight casting you will do is if tarpon are rolling on the surface, there is some great tarpon fishing on the the south west side of the island for BIG tarpon, if you had a car and and willing to drive the couple hrs to get there it is great stuff.

I'm not saying don't fish San JUan but just be prepared for the tarpon fishery it is...that's all.

I can also tell you who NOT to book in San Juan, try the two guys I mentioned and if you can't get hooked up with either of them then PM me to check on other guys...I'd rather not bash some other guides in public but will tell you who to avoid in a PM.

I searched previous posts on San Juan and pretty much all say the same. Got to think whether this is worth it. Might well be better off saving the it for stripers in the Merrimack. As for guides, the previous posts have their say but I always gravitate to a postive recommendation and don't always take the negatives too seriously unless a clear trend is identified.

Well, how did it go?
Did you go out with Omar.
Now that is a guide I can say knows his waters.
I got to fish with him on the 13th anual Tarpon Tournament out of Cangrejos Yacht Club and he was hot on the fish.

I never got out as I had business east of San Juan with no time to get out to the better waters. I abandoned fishing in the San Juan lagoons for reasons outlined in several threads. Thanks for the insight. Probably saved some $ for another outing.
