Seeing the large Mediums that have been caught recently, and the photo of Shaun this morning, has got me to thinking.
From time to time I fish solo, should I carry a harpoon in addition to my gaffs? I would appreciate any recommendations of brand, size, rigging and where to buy one.
What about a Tailer, is that something I should be considering in addition or as an alternative?
I think that a harpoon would be a good insurance policy to have in the event of hooking one of these monsters. Instead of having to wait for it to come close enough for gaffing you could harpoon the larger fish when they come in to range which is a little father away thatn gaffing range. I don't think you need to spend big money on one though, but the poon harpoon is nice if you can afford one.

Get a harpoon!!!! Anything over 60" if your gonna keep it, POON it.
Poon Harpoons is a local company (Falmouth) They make a great harpoon that breaks down into several pieces and comes in a bag like a big squid bar. Fits on nearly ANY small boat since broken down its about 3 feet long. Assembles in seconds so if you hook a slob you can get it up and running while the fish is being fought.
Never used a tailer.

It's also worth a look at the First Light Modular Implement of Death and Tagging (c). It's the swiss army knife of tuna end game. Want to tag the fish? Tag stick. Want to impale it? Harpoon tip. Want to gaff it? Gaff hook. Want to de-hook it? Yup, does that too.
It is the only device on the market that accomplishes all of these with an easy swap. Give them a call at 978-948-7004. It is truly impressive.

The Poon Harpoon is a great tool. The First Light device sounds nice too.

Fisherman's outfitters makes a one piece harpoon (6, 7 or 8' long) that's 1/3 the price of the Poon Harpoon. The only benifit the Poon has is it can break down for storage, and that is only a benifit if you need to break down to store. Since you mention you fish by yourself, you would want the harpoon ready to go anyway because you won't have time to rig if fighting a fish solo.

I forgot to ask, why is it you advise against using a tailer? Many thanks.

I used an aftco tail rope thingy on these fish back when they were in the 40" class and that was very manageable. But know that these fish are in the 60+" class I don't even carry it on the boat. I make the decision of weather a fish will be killed long before we hook it. I'll either poon it or leader it and tag & release it.

Not trying to answer for Terry, but as I read it in your quote he doesn't say not to use one, but rather that he's never personally used one.

I went back and read it, you're right. Thanks ...
