Is the Quantum Cabo worth the extra money over the Boca? Size is the next question. The rod is a TFO TiCRX 7' for 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz lures. Would the Boca or Cabo 40 be too small? The 50's seem sort of large...

I own a Boca 40 and a Cabo 60. The small reel is used in the lagoon and on calm days in thesurf. It is mounted with 30# braid. and will cast 1/4 - 1.5 oz lures with a 7' Quantum rod. The Cabo 60 is my big stick for the surf and is used off the beaches casting 50#braid with BIG lures and bait with a 10' Ugly Stick.

For the lures you mention, I should think the Boca would be adequate.

I have a Boca 50 and two Cabo 50's, a Boca 70 and a Cabo 80....I love the drags on these reels. the 80 handled tuna fine last year and I pair the 50's with my Tallus rods with 30lb braid for stripers. I also have the little Cabo with 20lb braid and light action TFO that has been great for albies and bonito.

Good deals on these reels usually on E-bay.

My Cabo 40 is small enough to serve the purpose of being a schoolie as well as a bonito/albie reel, yet has landed several 40" bass and blues over 10 lbs - and it has shown no signs of wear and tear (the reel is two years old, has about 1/2 dozen albies, 3 bass in the size limit listed above and a good number of better sized bluefish, as well as countless schoolies, smaller 'rat' blues, fluke and whatever smaller game is in town on it's resume')

I have the Cabo 40 on a fast action 7' spinning rod rated for for lures about 1/2 to 1.5 oz. I haven't really tested this reel yet, as it's new this year. I like it so far. I also have a new Shimano Stradic FI 4000 on a 7' Temple Fork spinning rod rated for lures about 3/8 to 1 oz.. The Shimano is a few bucks cheaper , a couple ounces lighter, and also seems like a very nice reel. I have to say, based on my early impressions, I think I like the Shimano better. Casts a country mile. But I don't think you can go wrong with either.

HatTrick,

I own both Cabo and Boca 40 on St. Croix 7' med action rods. I have caught propabaly 20 bass 10 blues between 12 - 20 lbs on each with no issue. I do credit the rod for doing most of the work on fish that size . They have both performed well on the bigger 40 in bass, drags felt similar .I would not spend the extra on the Cabo next time unless you need less weight, they are fairly light anyway. They are great looking reels but I am very dissatisfied with the cheap ARSE paint on plastic , chipping and comming off quickly. They boast the 6 layers of protection , what a crock !! I have a few of the smaller Penn SS reels that are 8 years old that look better, but not quite as smooth as the Quantums. My next spinning reel will be Diawa.

Sorry forgot to mention the 50 and 60 are beasts and would be heavy for your intended rod. I used a friends 50 for a day and it was much to heavy to cast all day

Good luck,

Rob

Rob,
Which St. Croix rods are you using? Are they the Tidemasters and if so which lure weight range? What line? All of this stuff is pricey so I am hoping to avoid too much trial and error.
Thanks

HatTrick,

Yes I have two St. Croix Tidemaster TS76MHF - Which is 7'6"
med/Heavy 10-20lb test 1/2 to 1-1/2 oz lure.

Dont get me wrong I know nothing about the rods you are looking at St. Croix is expensive and not nessasary to get 12 to 20 lbs fish to the boat .
Most rods close to the $100 range will handle these fish no problem.
My buddy that is on a budget fishes ugly sticks and does fine.

Sorry forgot to mention the line. I am using suffix 20 lb braid, to 3 feet of 25lb floro but power pro works well also and less is less money.

I use braid mainly for the sensitvity

good luck

Rob,
I ended up purchasing a 7' TFO TiCr2 MH 3pc. rod rated for 3/8 - 1 oz lures. I have had good luck with TFO rods so far, and I like the ability to pack a spinning rod with my 3 and 4 pc fly rods when I travel.

So the set up is:
Quantum Boca 40
TFO 7' MH for 3/8 - 1 oz.
Vanish flourocarbon 14 lb. line The 14 lb. line may be light but the 17 lb feels as though it may be a little heavy for the reel rod combo and lighter lures. We'll see.

Thanks for all your comments.
