On the water from 1-7pm, although only a small portion of the time was spent fishing. Took my daughter and her college roommate to the southside around 1pm, as they both like light tackle action with spinning rods. Birds and bait just outside of Turtle Cove, slightly to the west about 1/2 mile out. Nice sized blues were the target, and they were very fat! We caught about 6, and also stumbled on to some nice fluke action under the blues----worked on every drift.
I pulled out the 8 weight and enjoyed some fly rod action too.........couldnt get any takes on sand eel patterns(lots of looks but no takes). Eventually found out that the blues were on big spearing (4-6 inches), and switched over to a white bonita bandit type of fly and hooked up right away-big white deceiver would have probably worked too. Spinning gear was deadly dicks.

Later in the day we were cruising around Gardners, and found tons of very small blues in Cherry Harbor.......they were more like big snappers, about 1/2 to 1 lb each. They were on small 2-3 inch spearing. Went out to the Gull Islands, and then headed back to Montauk. Didnt see anything on the way in.

Plan to try an offshore trip on Fri/Sat/or Sun based on conditions.

Mike, nice to hear your reports. Keep them coming. You're the only action on this board. What kind of boat are you fishing from? I'll look out for you when the fall action starts around Gardiners.
I'll be fishing a 23' SeaCraft. Right now I have been concentrating on bass on the flats from shore. I have been fishing spots on the eastern North Fork that had been producing a couple of keeper bass per trip. But last two trips have only produced some very small bass, small blues and tremendous bites. Unfortunately from no-seeums and mosquitos.

used to have a 23 ft seacraft too........great boat, but I wanted twin outboards as a safety factor for our offshore adventures. Went to a Grady 257, with twin 150 yamahas, and this one has a closed transom...which was missing from my older seacraft. It has a T top and outriggers......called Frenzy III.........see you out there. I will be fishing all of July, then out again in Sept/Oct.

Lots of Bass in Montauk right now, tons of bait on the southside....and rare topwater action for this time of the year too.
