Lets try a different format for this post..........A Top Ten List about todays offshore trip.

#10- perfect day, light NE breeze, slight swell about 2ft, sunny and cool.

#9-water was clear and calm so you could see everything on the surface, greenish but clean........saw multiple sea turtles

#8-could see land the entire day, as we were SE of Block Island near the Acid Wreck, about 20 miles from Montauk Point

#7-bluefish at the point in the am were all really too big to be used for live bait, all between 10-12 lbs. Deadly dicks, let sink and reel in slow.......did the trick.

#6-watched two blue sharks chase down bluefish right on the surface about 8 miles east of Montauk.........looked like a clip from "Wild Kingdom"!!

#5-hooked a mystery fish at the inside hole(same spot as #5) on a diamond jig on the bottom. After 20-30 min, we only had gotten the fish half way to the surface. Hook popped out. Didnt run like a bluefin or even a blue, just pounded away and stayed deep. Any guesses?

#4-Chum lasted a long time with the cooler water temps, and it did the job. We had non-stop action and at least two blue sharks around the boat all day. Caught and released 6 with conventional gear, ranging from about 75lbs to around 250 lbs! More tangles than I would care to share or talk about.

#3-we had a big thresher take a live bluefish bait about 20 yards behind the boat, right on the surface. ....quite a sight with that long tail splashing around. Then it dove, and ran non-stop at warp speed until we were almost spooled, cranked the drag to max on an old Penn Intl 20 weight and broke the line(only 30lb test).

#2-ran into massive schools of dolphins, maybe 4-5 football fields worth, they were putting on an amazing show that we could see from at least one mile away! Got some great video.

#1-caught my first two blue sharks on the 14 weight fly rod, got both fish to the boat. One was released elegantly(about 75lbs) and one released himself after seeing the boat and going on some great runs----flyline itself severed(maybe rubbed against the tail or skin as I was only using a 3-4 ft wire leader).

Will try and post pictures and/or video tomorrow or Sunday. Will try again tomorrow, maybe straight south to the butterfish hole area?

Great report - doesn't get much better than that for one trip. Re the mystery fish (#5), I got out very briefly this weekend and caught what I assumed was a big bass on a sand eel pattern and same thing happened. I saw a flash of silver, then the fish dove deep. It was very big and most assuredly a bass. I also got de-hooked before getting it back to the surface. So it is possible that there were some very large cows around (I read reports of 50-pounders) feeding on the abundant bait. That was my excitement for the day. Had I also caught sharks on fly, saw huge pods of dolphins and whales in flat calm seas in the same day, I would still be in heaven right now.

I agree on the big bass theory........that was my best guess. Outside chance of a big cod too, given that we were 8 miles east?

BTW-video clips are now available if you email me.(shark, dolphin, whales)
Also, pics from both trips are on the 7/11 post.

Let me know if you put them up and I'll add them to our video library. Sounds like a really memorable day.

On the bottom, it's also possible it could have been an atlantic halibut.

A friend of mine hooked a ray on a parachute last week not far from the elbow. At times he felt hung up and at times it gave way to deep thumps. Over an hour later they brought a stingray up a few feet from the surface that easily went all of 200 lbs.
