View Full Version : walking on water
If you have considered outriggers and fish flats, let me tell you, it's an outrage. Do it.

I've always wanted to but never have. Who makes those pontoons?
You can get a ram tube kit and the floats from a well known online kayak fishing stuff site (!) - sorry - don't want to do the wrong thing if they are not a sponsor.
They have instructions and the pvc pipe you can find instructions for online - you have to figure most of that out for yourself but it's not hard - that bit you do and buy yourself. I made backing plates for the hull from aluminum. I couldn't get access to the hull site behind the seat so I put them forward - actually they are perfect there - don't get in the way of the pedals and don't cause a casting obstruction either. PM meif you want full details, specs and photos and I'll happily help.
It's a neat half day project and just the best thing that I have done to my fishing since buying the yak itself.
It takes about a minute to get used to them. You can stand on the flat hatch just in front of the seat. Super stable - even in a light chop. By definition you wouldn't really be sight fishing in anything major, anyway. I couldn't be happier with the result. They don't drag if you keep them inplace while driving short distances to repeat drifts and they are very easy to stow and deploy.
The increase in visibility is exponential and you can cast full whack. Also great to be able to stand up and ease the back every now and then.
We had a very cloudy day first outing but I can't wait to get out again in sunshine.

Sam,
I set up the outriggers and casting platform this spring. Tested it a couple of times and it is great to be able to stand and fish. I'll post some pictures when I go home.
The set up was made with supplies from Lowes and my local hardware store and costs less than $50. This includes a platform and two sets of outriggers.
My set up is a little different and not perfect, but is very simple and works great. I'll go into more details later. What I like about it is that I did not add any permanent screws or other hardware.

Included is a picture of the kayak. I'll give more details later when I have some time.

I'm late to the party, but inspired nonetheless.
I need to get me a setup like that.
Looks fun.
