Hey Gang -

I was wondering if anybody knew if there was any real difference between Seagar leader material and their running line sold on a 200 yd. spool (known as InvisX)? I bought the 200 yd. spool to use as leader material, thinking it was cheaper to buy 200 yds at $20 vs. 25 yds at $10. If there is some kind of difference in abrasion resistance or some other quality I should know about, I won't use and will return it.

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Seagar—is a propitiatory product and is manufacture differently than all other brands of fluorocarbon.
Within their product line they have engineering different types of fluorocarbon (InvizX) main line over tippet, which is to be used for that specific application. Use their Fluoro Premier material for building your leaders. Or their GrandMax for your tippet.

Seagar has engineered their InvizX product with casting ability as it's main feature. This is something that not a factor in your leader's. Therefore, you can assume they have engineered their leader material with the correct attributes, such as, abrasion resistance and knot strength; all of witch are needed for leader construction.

I have never found a need to build the butt and med section of my leader's out of fluoro, only the tippet section. Assuming you are building hand tied leaders for a fly rod set up. This makes the single purchase of a 25yrd spool of .18 tippet material acceptable.

I appreciate your sharing your knowledge on the subject. Sounds like good advice, sticking to leader material only for leaders/tippets. Tight lines, friend!

In a saltwater leader I use hard mono for the butt, med and tippet. I only used Fluoro when I need a quicker sink rate, or when I am stalking super weary prey. Fluoro works well when casting to large Brown trout that receive tons of fishing pressure. Or Bonefish, some of which have a Phd and can tell you who tied the fly that just swam by.
