Hi all
Im from the UK, kinda new to this area,and wondered if anyone would have any info on DIY on the flats and fishing Guides,also what other oportunities are there on Green Turtle Cay, we plan to go next year some time around end April,maybe May...
I have done some research and most think its a good destination, and it seems a good time, but i wonder if anyone would care to share 'specifics' with me...
Thank you in anticipation,
Nick

Never fished GTC, always Cherokee on Abaco. First do a search here, should be something, I am sure, Second check out http://abacoforum.com/ and http://abacomessageboard.com/(click on the news link on the left side of the page and open up the Abaconian Newspaper....it will list guides Tel #'s)
Good luck !

Fished there about 6 or 7 years ago. Fished two mornings w/ guide in flats boat. Lots of bones but only landed one. It was my first and weighed 7 1/2 lbs. I believe there are only two guides on the island and do it yourself wade fishing is very limited. Accommdations at Green Turtle Club were pricey but excellent. - Roccus

I'll be going to Treasure Cay 1st week in Dec.. Hopefully I'll have some feedback. Fishing a day w/ Rick Sawyer out of GTC. Heard there's big bones...

Sorry, meant first week in Jan.. I'm leaving for Grand Bahama Dec. 26 for a week and then over to Treasure Cay for the second week. I'll be mostly DIY with a smattering of guided trips for good measure. I'll report back on my return. Don't think I've been so excited for a trip since Spring Break FLA in '85 :brow.

[QUOTE=Nick(uk);277129]Hi

I´m from Denmark, and I think of going to Bahamas late feb to early march. But I am new to The Bahamas Island, did some bonefishing in Cuba and Los R.
Any advice for where to stay and go is welcome. I mostly go DIY. Hope to find nice bones --127-3-

Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately I don't have anything solid to report on GTC since the wind and cold from that large front that started the new year blew out my trip with Rick Sawyer. It's unfortunate since he seems like a fantastic guide and the supposedly giant bones that reside there. I'll go back for sure. My week on Treasure cay was for the most part a real dud due to the weather conditions...cloudy, windy and 60-71 daytime temps (50 nightime) the whole week, which is frigid down there.
An interesting thing happened the last day as it provided some sun and little wind albeit the temp was still 71. The days following were supposed to(and did) bring the worst cold front of all, so I pondered my dilema and considered that the bones may need to take this opportunity between severe cold fronts to feed even though it was still cold by normal standards. It was already 9am as I strolled over to Florences' for some Jonny Cake. I inquired whether O' Donald (local guide) went out and my answer was "yes, bones got to eat some time". While walking back to the suite my pace quickened as I pondered the affirmation of my hypothesis. After a few calls and a half hour drive I was being poled on a flat on the west side up in Cooperstown. Long story short the fish were ravenous and the least skittish I have ever seen. I had an estimated 12# fish follow almost to the boat and eat as I left the fly resting on the bottom only to have the hook pull on the 1st run (I was pretty devastated). Here's a pic of a nice tailing fish I took wading (burrr!) a few minutes later, it was one of 5 I took wading that flat alone in 45 minutes. If I spooked out some fish they would push off 50 yards and tails would pop up again as they resumed feeding. Almost every guide I spoke to said fishing would be a waste of time that day...

Grand Bahama was good the week prior with 1 day guided and the rest DIY. Highlight was a 9# fish I DIY'ed which was the only fish that day. Perfect set up to small cruising/tailing group of fish...picked the fly up on the bottom and tore off some serious backing, brilliant!
