View Full Version : The Fat Lady

Me thinks the Fat Lady has turned into a Snowbird and has gone south for the winter.

It was a beautiful day and I spent about five hours fishing and had little to no breeze all day long.

The bottom line is I had two hits, saw one fish follow the fly in and had one fish about 30" cruise by about 6 feet in front of me close to the end of the day and continue down the beach and out of site.

I think it was the final farewell for the year from the fish, it was like them saying "Time to Get out of Dodge".

I did manage to catch one thing, it was on a backcast and luckily it didn't break the rod.

I've heard rumors that fish are still around up here in Beantown.

Legal fish too, eating certain large plastics worked slowly.

Just rumors though. ;)

I heard a rumor she may still lurking and as my friend and I discussed, if the weather and time permits before the snow flies we would give it another shot. Like I told him I did manage to get a few last December.

Nothing doing at three beaches in Plymouth and Sandwich today. Fished a total of three hours without a hit. Earlier in the week the diving ducks were busy picking up bait but not much today.

Picked up 4 Bass and 2 shad this afternoon in Sandwich. Nothing of any size but the weather cooperated. 50 degree weather on November 30, excellent.

I think I'll give it another try.

You could always spend $60 to fish down in CT --123-3 I would guess there are a few in the lower Housatonic

The sky here in MI just dumped 4" of snow in about 3 hours...hoping to get the yak out on Sunday to chase a steelhead or two.

You can fish for winter hold over stripers in the upper Thames River. The salt/fresh demarcation line is 500' north of the I-95 bridges. Non res. fresh water season license fee is $80. 3 day license goes for $32. The marine license is a bargain.--126-3-

CT must not want any outsiders fishing in their waters? Other than some nice hatches on the Farmington, and fishing for surplus broodstock Atlantics, I just have memories of colorless hatchery planters. For what MI offers, they apparently don't charge enough for their non-resident licenses.

My 4" of snow turned into 10"-14" overnight...

$140 a year to be a traveling fisherman in CT.

This is funny to me since I don't fish CT.

But if I owned a tackle shop or lodging near water I would be livid. Ah well, at least the economy is cranking along so the drop in tourists won't even be noticed.

FFM, it looks like free fishing in MA next year. I have an extra yak if you feel like heading up this way when you are out!

Ct. doubled all license fees. The license issue came at a very bad time with the state scratching and clawing for revenue.

The tentative plan is to rent a house on Matunuck Beach with a few other couples in late September/early October so we can maximize the WW albie opportunities. Various scenarios (divorce, being single, getting married, having a son) have prevented my annual trip out there for far too long. My plan would be to haul my 12' Heritage Redfish out there, and at least one of my buddies will be out there as well with his WS Tarpon 140. So we may be up for a Beantown paddle, particularly if things look favorable for a big lineside. If not, you will be welcome to launch with us on the beach in RI ;)

Pimple headed beureaucrats are the same everywhere. Their theory of " sales are dropping, raise the price( read tax) and think of all of the increased revenue we will raise" never has worked and never will. Similar to raising tobacco taxes and wondering why smuggling goes up and legit sales go down.

Go figure...Pretty sad as these increases make it cheaper for a CT resident to go fish and hunt in other states as a non resident rather than stay at home and invest money locally.

Perhaps the CT issue has nothing to do with revenues.

It could be that they are actively trying to decrease the number of anglers in the state, I doubt it, but it is a possibility.

The huge hikes across states are just waiting for analysis by some soon to be public policy PhD.

And on the subject of the thread, I haven't fished the brine around the haba for over a week I will be interested to see if they moved off with the storm.

I know the local rep. very well, it was simply a fund raiser. He's a fisherman and is livid about the increases. He's considering sueing the state on the basis of the license being unconstitutional. Today a friend told me that the state is requiring the salt water( they call it marine) license along with the freshwater license in the inland district if you're fishing for anadromous species.

I believe that is correct. My reading of the requirement for licenses is that anyone fishing for striped bass (or other species like shad) upriver will need a license. The example in the feds materials mentioned landlocked anglers in PA needing a license to fish stripers in the Delaware River.

When Shad first returned to the Merrimack, we were supposed to have a FW license to fish above the tidal marker. Then, the tidal marker was obliterated due to construction and the state changed to be required above the first I-495 Bridge.

I fished Maine a lot in those days too and there a FW license was reqired above the first Bridge spanning the river above the ocean.

I've been tempted on the warm days to try it from shore but never fished the salt at night this late in the year..now I'm more than tempted...thats rediculous Eric...you are on track for a striper each month of the year
