I'm getting ready to buy an 8wt Legend Ultra for about $300 and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this particular series of rod?
Any other suggestions in this price range? The warranty and the quality of components is steering me towards the St. Croix.
1st day out this season... Fished Great Bay on Sunday a.m.. 1/2 dozen schoolies 12-20 inches an hour before high tide.

I have 7 weight and a 4 weight St. Croix Legend rods. They are very good for the money, cast well and are made well. I find them a bit stiff.
I also have two Loomis G3's 7 and 9 wts. I prefer them. Price is about the same.
Keep up the good fishing.

I think I have an eight weight multi piece. I bought it when the another rod broke and they no longer built it. I have not used it. If you are near Marblehead give me a response and come up and try it. I own many st croix rods and think they are really a good buy.

I got an 8wt Ultra Legend 3 piece last season. There is a guy on one of the other popular FF board's classifieds that solicits for trade-ins on St Croix rods so I took him up on the offer. While I fish a 9wt IMX 90% of the time the Ultra is a fine rod. I found that my Ryall reel foot is too small for the UL's seat so you may want to check to see that this is not an issue for you. While lawn casting is not quite the same as on the water - if you get an opportunity to cast before you buy that is always the best approach. Good luck with your purchase...

I got the 4 wt. this spring and love it. have also thrown the 9 wt. around and think it is a great rod, great buy, and great warranty. Make sure you try it out to see if it fits your casting style.

I picked up a 3-pc 8wt Legend Ultra this spring, and have been really happy with it. Another thing to look at are the Redingtons- I have a 7 and a 9 in the 4-pc series for around the same money- and the same warranty.

Matt- I have the 10wt 2pc Legend Ultra and love it. I also partook of the rod swap and picked up the 3pc and find it more of a medium action than the 2pc. I contacted the company and talked with the design engineer who reported that the 3pc was made on the older Legend mandril and it came out before the 2pc which is made on an entirely new and different mandril. The 2pc is really fast, but I find no need to overline it. For my money St Croix makes a very good rod( mine is 2 yrs old with no corrosion and it gets the same care as all my rods)- wish I could say the same for some of the others I own. rel
