The following report is from the Northern New England section of RT, and it is part of the NNE intro page. Host(?) Tom Tero wrote it, and we should ALL take it to heart.

Thank you, Tom.

"....In a more serious note, it's been brought to my attention that a lot of bass have been killed by liveliners on the Presumpscot River. My source, who prefers to remain anonymous, witnessed a bunch of dead stripers lying around on the mud flats upstream from the route 295 bridge. These fish, all in the mid 30 inch range, had apparently inhaled livelined alewives and had been gut hooked. Since these fish are illegal to keep, they were released with the hooks in their guts. I would urge that if you are livelining bait, please use circle hooks. I would also urge that you not liveline at all, but I know that's unrealistic. Maybe a closed season until July 1 (after the alewive migration is over) modeled after the Kennebec River regulations would work well on the Presumpscot.

Don't forget to send me your own reports, and until next week...

Tight Lines!
