1st time there - you fly into GHB airport over a beautiful hard sand flat on final approach - you are squirming in your chair. the place is very remote and as i find out , outrageously beautiful. my rental home sits on a mile long beach on the carrib side with a group of very educated bones and some very large singles with PHD's. the flat however is so perfect it keeps you there beyond the time you shoud quit. then again - smoking a cuban and walking along side a 3 foot nurse shark while wading in pink sand does wonders for the soul. the island has many road side carrib flats that are remarkable in size and length and beauty. and yes - they all hold bones... i finally got into the friendly ones on an oceanside flat that were hugging the beach as large groups of cudas patroled the outside. bunny bones, bitters and the like had them burning the backing off the reel. caught 5 in the 3- 5 lb class and took a break to get out of the sun and have lunch in the shade and a cold kalick. back out and picked up a couple more in the curl of the surf as it collapsed on the sand. bare feet - hard white sand - and bones - and not another person in sight.... i repeated this in other areas on my trip as welll as enjoyed the very hospitable locals... prices were reasonable for sure and a high clearance rental is a must... most places were 2 - 4 miles in on very questionable roads - think a standard with lots of shifting over 100 - 200 yard stretches of rock and washout. a few good places to eat at night as well as cooking up snapper caught off the deck. next time i'll bring heavier spinning gear for the 4 - 5 foot cudas we jumped - straightened out the hooks on the first jump... over all - good fishing for many species, nice people and beautiful beaches...
