Hello.
I have a trip planned to the Lake Placid area on the weekend of 8/20. I would like to spend a few days camping and fly fishing.
Can anyone recommend a river in the area? Wadeable, as i wont have room to pack the boat. Also, if there is a decent tenting area close by it would sure beat sleeping in the truck.
thanks guys, any advice helps

Joe

AuSable river and the north pole campground. There are some very large browns in there and great dry fly fishing!

looks like a great place. big river. do you know of any fly shops in the area?
it's been so dry in wester MA, there hasn't been enough water for good fly fishing.

Looking forward to the trip. thanks for the advice

The evening hatch is right on the river and has good flys and advice. It's got a hotel behind it and a bar at the other end of the property that overlooks the falls. Also I don't know of the state of Fran Betters or his adirondack sport shop but he is the river master and you should spend some money with him if he or his family are still around.

I am in Placid now, spent many summers up here in my 20's. The Ausable (West Branch) is a fun river. Fran Betters shop has some good patterns however Fran passed away this winter and the quality of the service has slid. The Hungry Trout shop has some good stuff as does Jones Outfitters in LP itself. If you can get directions to it, the water below the dam in Willmington is not stocked but heavily populated with nice fish, mostly browns and doesn't get the pressure of up stream. The popular sections along the road from LP to Willmington has a lot of fish too but also a lot of anglers. I like starting below the ski jumps and working up stream, some great pools, the size of fish drops but you get in to brookies as well as the other trout. Right now Prince is the nymph of choice, stimulators and hornbergs on top, and you can test your skills on the mid morning trico hatches (falls between 9-12 each day)

You won't need the kayak on the Ausable, right now that water is low but not too warm. I fished it hard during the tricos last week, very frustrating, had some luck on ant patterns during that spinner fall. evenings are micro baetis stuff (24-28) but there should be bwo action with the cooler nights.

temps in the low 40's at night up there, bring some layers.
also, no-seeums at dusk are killer on that stream, cigars and deet.
