View Full Version : Montauk Madness has begun

I am sure that by now the word is out or has been out for some time that the annual Albie invasion has begun in earnest out at the Point. I headed over yesterday to check it out knowing full well what to expect. We got there before first light after enduring a bumpy ride across the pond. Didn't mark or see anything around the point so i headed west down the south side. They finally showed and we caught 8-10 all on a new epoxy silverside pattern I came up with. They wouldn't touch any other fly I presented to them. Which wasn't disappointing but odd.
The TOA's were in full force as well. Especially the two Whalers I saw that we finally had to get way away from to keep our sanity. There were an unbelievable amount of huge boats chasing this year that I have not seen in the past 10 years or so. Big sportfishing boats were all joining in to the madness which made the seas very confused and dangerous trying to stay on your feet and cast. The fish were predictably not in a good feeding mood as the amount of boats harassing them was insane.
There were some nice bass feeds on top in tight to the beach late in the day which were fun and comical to watch as there were some boats that just had no courtesy for the surfcasters and the fusillade of obscenities that ensued would have curled your gramma's undies. These guy's should really be a bit more intelligent with their verbal fist O cuffs as there are a lot of children out there fishing as well and I would be embarrassed to have to try and explain to some young kid who was on my boat what those guy's were saying.
Not a bad day but definitely a struggle with all of the congestion with far too many boats and far too few fish. Won't be doing that again on a weekend.

eating my non-epoxies pretty well!!!!
It was weird Brendan. Flies I have used for years as go to's got ignored and the new epoxy I crafted up got slammed. We ran out of them so I went back to my older epoxy pattern and that one got slammed as well. As soon as I put on my non-epoxy patterns they just ignored me??? Very odd but I am not complaining my new epoxy worked very well and is relatively an easy tie. How have you been I didn't see you out there Saturday but I figured you were other areas we both know well instead of dealing with the madness.

This past weekend was the first time in 9 years I ever fished Montauk on a Saturday and when we first got out there the first thing I said was "OK, now I remember why I never fish weekends"
But in truth it got better as the day went on. I think those big boats were inside the lee in the morning because it was blowing pretty good outside the point in the rips where they like to troll.
as the day went on the wind lay down anf the fish spread out and it wasn't too bad accept for when the bass came up of course. good solid blitzes, but they were relatively small in size and mostly tight to shore, so you had the usual tension that goes along with that.
It was a beautiful day, and I managed to get tight to some fish. Very happy about that since it was not really a planned trip.
I still prefer weekdays though.

Couldn't agree more Phil I knew it was going to be a madhouse but I went anyway as i had a guy with me that really wanted to fish Montauk again. I will doo my best to not visit again unless it is a weekday and maybe not ever if the fish are on the CT./RI side in catchable numbers.

Good to see you out there yesterday, Brendan. Nice motors! I had one of the best albie days ever last Fri. Heard from some other friends that Sat. and Mon. were good also. And yesterday I wore my arm out and hooked up only twice. And it got deader and deader as the outgoing progressed. Even the bass didn’t show. Was going to hang around and see if it went off at the point at dusk, but got too disgusted and headed for barn at 4:30. I should have tried Gardiners and sluice. Fishers full of rat blues, by the way. Wish I could figure it out. You got any theories? Will try again tomorrow.

Took a spin yesterday afternoon from the Ruins to Eastern Plains Point and then towards Gull. Not one bird... no bait .. nothing. Didn't even toss my Deadly Dick. Where are the Albies? I rather catch a handful around Gardiners than a boatload at Montauk. Over that battle boat crap.

I fished Montauk once and that was enough for me. Yes, there were fish there in targetable numbers, but the whole point was covered up with NY reg boats, captained by morons. In MA we have our share of morons too, but poor Montauk is just too small a piece of real estate and gets covered up more quickly.

Good points but we've yet to have one nut smash a boat directly into another. :)

...then again, I'm sure haymakers have been thrown on the surf at one time or another. Do they really need those buckknives strapped to their ankles?

You can also think of easy daily Grand Slams on the fly too.

Albie, striper, bluefish - what would be the 4th in the grandslam?

A true slam is a Bass, Bluefish, Albie and Bonito all in one day, three out of four is a "hat trick" for those hockey minded types. A true slam is hard to get no matter where you fish, even Montauk.

True slam is all four but I meant, Bluefish, bassa and FA which most of the time, can be a no brainer around the point if you put some hours in.

We had some of that last Saturday Brendan. But it was very close to shore and the shorecasters got really bent out of shape when some knuckleheads decided that chasing those fish into the beach was a good idea right in front of the surfcasters(#$119)
I always keep my distance from them for obvious reasons. i saw some heavy metal coming dangerously close to a couple of the boats that were close to the beach. One of these days someone is going to be killed by those idiots on the beach. Frustrating for them yes, deadly NO!

Ram/filter feeds like that close to shore are a bit of a quandary. Perfect and really too easy for a flyguy so much so that you almost just want to observe. Shore guys are chomping at the bit only getting within their range perhaps momentarily so they want to make the most of their opportunity. Unfortunately, throwing tins or plugs often results in foul hooking. Perhaps surfcasters should sharpen their approach and boaters should keep a respectable distance and try to excercise caution and patience as their opps will surely come.

Agreed.
And in most cases, if you hang back the fish blow up near the boat anyway. Or, you can just swing down the beach a ways, and usually find schools that have less pressure on them.

I caught a bonita on Saturday at MTK....never caught one before there. Also had some bluefish, a couple albies and two birds -- what kind of "slam" is that, I wonder? I didn't catch a bass, but my buddy did, so the boat had some sort of "super slam."

was the bonita just mixed in with the blues and albies or did you see a group all on there own? just curious?
Thanks-Mike G

Really not sure. Thought I was casting into albies, but hooked a bonito. Could be that what I thought was albies was a pod of bonito, or they could have been mixed (though I've read that bonito and albies don't mix).
In any case, it was a cool catch. Fought differently than a bluefish, but didn't run like an albie.

Bonito don't normally mix in with albies , but it does happen. Over the years I've boated a few bones that were pulled out of an albie blitz.
