Today was what I call a “Tough Day on Equipment” I took two people out today and we ran out of Green Pond. Although novices, their mind was set on hooking and landing a big fish on light tackle. With that in mind I worked the areas around the sound that I thought had the best potential for fish in the 40” range. We were armed with live eels and assorted plugs we tried MG with no luck, we went in to Woods Hole with a ripping current running through. Boat traffic and strong currents made things hectic on board and made me nervous. Letting caution be my guide I left a school of breaking fish and exited the Hole. We found a cove off of the sound that I have fished before with little luck, but I have always felt it would hold HUGE fish. It just looks that way. Today I found out I was right. They hooked and landed several mid 20” schoolies in the area and I began to see large fish cruising around. I lobbed an eel in front of one particular giant and watched it turn and eat the eel. I handed the rod to one of the parties and he fought the fish for some time. We got several good looks at the fish before the hook tore out of its mouth. The fish would easily have been the largest on my boat this year. It was solid in the 45” to 48” range taking magnification into account. A second fish in the 38” to 40” range left us in similar fashion. At least now I know where they live. I’ll be back for another round soon. Landing that fish probably would have eased the pain of the broken Loomis rod, the 3 Penn Reels that now need to be respooled, the multiple scuffs on the gel coat, the broken glove box and the now inoperative fuel gauge. It was REALLY a tough day on equipment. So now I am en route to West/E&B Marine to repair and/or replace everything to get ready for tomorrow. This time hopefully things will be different.
