Hi all! Despite the blowing wind my friend and I are coming to fish MTK for the first time...ever! We are fishing in my Parker 23 CC, but were hoping to get some info on spots to try fishing. We are mostly Fly and Spin guys, but will do whatever it takes. As for spots, finding birds is obvious, but other general locations to start looking would be helpful. We have looked at the Nautical charts and read the reports on gin beach, the rips, etc. but don't really know where these are. The only spots we know are the obvious South side on the Atlantic beach, Shag rock, Washington Shoals, the buoy by Shag rock (stuff from looking at the local NOAA chart). We are planning to fish Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday, launching out of MTK pond.

We would really appreciate any tips on where to fish and what tides to fish them. The tide reports I have are from Noreast.com. I am hoping they are more accurate than the reports for Moriches Inlet which tend to run 1.5 to 2 hours behind.

Thanks everyone for the help! It is very much appreciated.

This time of year you'll either see birds on blitzes or blitzes w/o birds anwhere from Gardiners Island to the Light and anywhere west along the Ocean back to town. If your fly and lt.tackle, it's not a matter of "spots" right now. It's a matter of finding where the fish are hitting bait. Right now, mostly bay anchovies I would think.

The spots you mentioned would be areas to look. Shagwong from the point to the outer can, The Rips and the Southside and anywhere in between. As a rule North Side, outgoing, South Side on an incomming. Beware about following the fleet in tight to the breakers on the Southside, even the experienced swamp a boat there now and then. Stay away from Surfcasters or you might get hit in the head with a 3 oz. bucktail.

This time of year it won't be hard to find where the fish are, you won't be alone by any stretch of the imagination, especially after the monsoon winds we've had for a while.

That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell right there. Make sure you bring your industrial sense of humor as well.
