Took my nephew and dad out for some striper fishing saturday. Dead low in river, managed 2 little one. They were using yo-zuri swimmers. Weak casters. River has seemed dirty to me this year, with little bait. I have really had a hard time picking up fish in there for some reason. This river fishes best with a small boat or kayak and on a dropping tide. I have never had much luck on the rising tide. I think the dropping tide concentrates the fish. Went outside and plugged along Cranes. Watched some guys dunking bait they were doing nothing. went to mouth of Essex, and did nothing. Did see two guys pick up a couple of schoolies. We headed back when we came into a small feeding school of fish. One other boat with flyrodder. I managed to get them both a couple of fish before school disappeared. Had a number of follows. Then we drifed over some bars at mouth of sound. Saw a number of small fish (20's) and picked up a few more. had a school swim right by the boat just a few inches below the surface. Of Course, could not get my dad to see them. and the casts were flubbed. I dont know whether they would have hit anything anyway.
But they had a good time which is all you can ask. The skies were sunny, they liked the scenery. We caught a few fish. And I spent a wonderful afternoon at home afterwards with my beloved boat trying to figure out why the @#@@@ trailer lights were not working right.
Fish long and prosper

It has apeared dirty looking this year. A few years ago I use to fish there all the time. The bunkers use to come in in big schools nice healthy fish. I would anchor at the end of Plum Island on the inside near the rocks with the day mark on it. Two hours on either side of the high tide you could watch the stripers chase your fly.
Let us know if the river clears up.
