Fished first light until about 9:30. Lots of fish, still averaging 7 to 10 lbs. Meat slingers were catching much larger fish, one about 40 lbs.
Tried fishing herring pattern real deep to catch a real big one, but no luck. The 7 to 10 lbers were on top and I was convinced the larger ones lurked below, tried everything I had, different retrieves, etc. Anyone have any suggestions about what might have worked for one of the monsters? They were hanging on the deep end of a drop off that went from 16 to about 30 feet. Perhaps you just can't get that deep effectively with a fly. I was fishing with an orvis depth charge 300 grain line.
