My group of 4 who traditionally go somewhere in the Bahamas are interested in mixing it up and trying maybe Belize or Mexico.
We're economical fisherman so none of those $3,000 per week places would interest us.
We'd like areas where we can wade in addition to fishing from boat as well.
Any suggestions?

Had a great time in San Pedro Belize. Fished with Omar Arcero and highly recommend him. He's a gentleman, affordable and works extremely hard to put his clients on fish. Also, in San Pedro you can stay and eat very economically. DIY options are there as well, but somewhat limited. Can't wait to go back!

Bonecrusher... depends on your target species for the most part. If you guys liketo fish bones than stick with Bahamas. Belize and Mex. have the bones but are tiny for the most part.

I would say Mexico if you want baby-mid sized tarpon for sure. Belize is a good mix of things... but either place are tough options for DIY fishing unless you do alot of serious homework, and even then you will find pockets here and there  but without a boat you will miss 95% of what both those places have to offer.

There are some great places to fish with guides in both places that will cost you from $1800-2500 to do it, if that's in your price range let me know and I'll shoot you couple suggestions

There are some DIY options out on glover's reef in Belize. I stayed on Manta resort, now closed I think, but there was a camp on the island next to it (sharing the same lagoon) and there were plenty of opportnites to catch fish around the island. Also the snorkeling out there was amazing. Bahamas offer a lot easier options, imho.

Thanks CaptJohn,
I guess I shouldn't have implied that we didn't fish with guides, we do. We just don't stay in the places that charge $3K for a week. If we can DIY fish in the evenings or arrival/departure days, then that's a bonus but we fish guides every day.
We're not really big time permit hunters, (I'd rather catch bones), but some tarpon would be fun. In the Bahamas, it's 95% bones with a cuda, shark or snapper here and there. I've had some rare shots at permit in the Bahamas but it's not something I'm going to spend all day looking for.
So, I guess our reason for going to Belize (I was there in 2000) is just to shake it up a little bit.

San Pedro is a good place and fairly reasonable. I know the gudies we used are 250 a day for the boat.... The Verde brothers are the best around the San Pedro area. I can give you some information. You could do a week with flights for about $2500.00/includes guides and meals not drinks. I;ve heard good things about Omar as well
