Well today prior commitments kept me on shore, but Capt. Joe got out on the water for a Fly-fishing trip with Dr. Clark from Philadelphia. They hit the water in Barnstable around 0445 hrs. and began to work some of the bars and rips in the area. He echoed Bill Downing’s reports of slow fishing and allot of casting. Good thing Doc Clark can throw a long line. He said the fish were there, but skittish and spooky. They managed 8 to 10 fish in the teens and 20’s before heading over to Wellfleet. They faired only slightly better on that side of the bay. The water temp was 73 degrees and the bass were tough to come by. They saw plenty on small fish on the flats but they were not eager to bite the various flies being offered. They scored 15 to 20 bass there, all in the low 20” range with allot of unanswered casts. They headed back to Barnstable to find “hundreds of boats and jet skis zipping around!” Back at the dock there was a 35-minute wait to pull out the boat. Welcome to summer on Cape Cod people!! It looks like its time to change locations with all this traffic.

This was a high traffic weekend, most weekends are not quite that bad. The key is timing. plan your trip to avoid the 4-5:30 time slot and you can miss most of the crowd after 6 it gets even better.

I fished the Pamet, early am with the falling tide on Mond - same story - the South West wind was howling, warming the water to the low 70's - no sand eels around and very few bass (though there were millions of tiny shrimp on the flats)... It will have to cool off a bit before the fishing heats up again..
