Hi all, I'm thinking about taking a trip down to NC in November to tryto catch falsies on a fly. Can anyone recommend a good resource for guides in the area or even a specific guide that you've had good luck with?

Also, i plan on trying to fish from the beachs on my own for a few days, can anyone offer any advice on that front?

thanks,
Mat

I've been down there for the last 5 years (oct-nov). Try Joe Shute's shop. Most charter guides are booked 1 year in advance. The fishing is great except you're at the mercy of possible bad weather. Be prepared for anything.

Also try Joe Keegan, hes down there in Nov and a good friend of mine. 860-434-7737 (a great boat with twin Honda 90s)

I don't know anything about the situation out of Morehead City, but regarding shore fishing at "the hook" at Cape Lookout, when the alberts are really in then there is decent shore-based fly fishing to be had. Stripping baskets are recommended, and I've even seen the guys chumming out of a second basket tied to their waist. The area is accessible only by boat or "ferry" which take out out and pick you up for @ $15 I believe. There are at least three "ferry" operations out of Harker's Island (NC), doubt reservations needed, and the two I'm sure of is the one at the (only) motel, Calico Jack's, and the one out of the Harker's Island Fishing Center. I have numbers if you can't find them otherwise. Guides out of Harker's are surely booked by now, except for cancellations, and Calico Jack's is probably booked up as well, but there are lots of accomodations in Morehead City. Use a 10 wt., 20 lb test fluoro leader, 30# or better backing, crank your drag down as tight as you dare, and HOLD ON.

matt,

I know several guides in the area from fishing with them, around them, and meeting them at shows. If you are still looking for someone to book with, drop me an email and I can give you some phone numbers (Capt joe shutes is a good place to start). Harkers Island gets unreal during that time of year, but a short jump away in Morehead city is a great place to stay. The fishing in Beaufort inlet is usually almost as good (sometimes better), and less people. There are some good opportunities for wade fishing, although it is not as predictable as a boat. There are a few ferry services to take you out and bring you back. I plan on doing a good bit of fishing down there this year, and am usually looking for someone to go with, drop me an email, and lets talk.

For a great list of guides, see Buzz Bryson's list below under "Guides needed for Cape Lookout trip". Brian Horsely is one of the best, and I can personally recommend Bryan DeHardt as a good guide and all-around nice guys.

Hi Matt,
I have just checked some of the post on this board. If you are still looking for a guide for this years fall false albacore fishing I still have one or two days open in the last part of October and one or two day in the first three weeks of November. I do however book a good number of highly qualified guides out of my shop, Cape Lookout Fly Shop in Atlantic Beach N.C. I would be happy to try and help you find a good guide. Most of the eastcoast areas finest guides are all down this time of year. If I can be of service let me know. You can go to my link on the carolinas section of the fish wire. Thanks for the other anglers that made posts referring to my shop!
