Fishing around the waters of Rhode Island has been outstanding. Last Wed. morning we boated several keepers. Hull Cove and the flats off Allens Harbor at the pre-dawn light brought hard hits from hungry linesides gulping our eigh-inch squid fly.
We failed to see the crab hatch that has been reported, so we gave the squid fly a try. My client's 7-year-old son landed two keepers, a 32in. 12 pounder, and a 34 inch 15 pound fish (dad had to give a little help). Both on a small 8 wt rod. Boy could he cast.
The best fish was an 18 pound 38 inch fish. Several other short fish were also taken.
Best advise... go very early or late in the day, stick with the large flies deep.
best,
