Winter storm damage has ruined the already marginal Lane's Cove boat ramp, in the Lanesville section of Gloucester. Nearest other ramp is Rockport's Granite Pier. Still the best on Cape Ann: Municipal ramp behind Gloucester High School. Others (half tide or higher): Corliss Landing (near Wheeler's Point) and Long Wharf (West Gloucester). Fees are charged at Granite Pier and at Gloucester city ramp; Corliss and Long Wharf are free.

The three dislodged concrete slabs that were blocking the Lane's Cove ramp have been removed, but no other repairs have yet been made to the battered site. Holes in the remaining slabs and gaps from the missing ones would make launching or hauling dicey, especially with small-boat trailers or low-riding vehicles. Anyone considering the ramp will want to inspect it first from the adjacent breakwall. Updates to follow if ramp conditions improve.

Just in time for the July 4 weekend, the Gloucester DPW has made repairs to the Lane's Cove ramp, replacing damaged concrete slabs at the bottom of the slope. Corroded and damaged slabs remain at the top, but with the lower section in excellent shape, the ramp is again usable.
