The good fishing is over for the season down there. The shad show up early May when they are a blast on a fly, they seem to lose their zip later in the season.Mid may the big stripers follow the herring up,and by mid june they are gone. As jdeno pointed there are safety concerns.I may be lucky but I have never had a problem. I wouldn't be down there alone after dark without a gun, however.Navigation can be tricky if you don't know the river. I have a 25 hp Merc. with an although not virginal but original prop.As far as the catfish go I didn't know there were any in New England till I caught a 4.5# one on a small shad dart.

Thanks for the warnings - this is the type of information which really makes this forum work.
My reasons for trying the area (as a shore fisherman) would be twofold, first its closer to my house, second - I have had enough of having my waders hooked by other (less considerate) anglers on Joppa and in the mouth of the Merrimack.
My other favorite, less populated area is down the southern end of Plum Island (Sandy Point). However, the ride out is pretty long and its tough to find structure and moving water there.
Looks like its time to get a boat.

I would not fish that area near or after dark, assuming you survive your car will not. makes those wader hookers look pretty good.
