Some of the nicest fly fishing comes from the northeastern ponds in the early summer. There are plenty of panfish such as bluegills, crappies and perch coming off their spawning beds, hungry, and anxious to hit a fly. The occasional large or smallmouth bass adds to the fun as do chain pickeral or a trout or two.
You can wade, canoe or use a boat. Personally, I prefer to float tube. The float tube was made for these circumstances. You won't win a race in a float tube but it will put you into fish holding pockets that you could never reach from a boat.
I use a 4# or 5# set up with a floating line. Small, colorful flys of the " bugger" or " leach" patterns work well as do most trout flys.
Bluegill, Crapie and Perch fillets are delicious and these are certainly not endangered species. Itis best to practice " catch and release" but if you do want something for the table, please only keep what you will eat.
Enjoy!
