My 13 year old grandson arrives late this week, and I'd like to get him into some stripers. He's done a little flyfishing with me, and that's how we'll start, but if things get tough, he'll go to a spinning outfit. I have fished only flies for so long that spin lures have become a mystery for me. What should I get him--in the way of lures--for the south Cape, the Merrimack, or the Kennebec up in Maine?

Also if anyone has best bets for Sunday through Wednesday of next week, I'd appreciate the help. We'll have a 14' Whaler with forty horses and a trailer, so we're mobile. I know my way a bit around the Merrimack, Waquoit Bay, Buzzard's Bay, and the Kennebec, but I've been away for the past two weeks and know little--other than what I've read here--about what's going on in those areas. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'd get some 6 inch slug-gos (white if you can find them), some white 3/8 oz. bucktail jigs and some metal like the Acme Fjiord Spoon, Kastmaster, Deadly Dick.

The Waquoit jetties almost always have schoolies eager to please, and it sounds like the Merrimack is picking up again. I wouldn't venture too far around the Merrimack in a 14 foot Whaler, though.

Steve,

If he's spin fishing on the Merrimack set him up with black Bass Assasins 4-5" with 3/8 oz. Kalin jigs. Fish from Joppa Flats down to the sandbar and back. You may want to jig up with some wire as the bluefish are now around.

If you have to go down there, be careful a near the jetties and mouth of the river. Make sure the kid keeps his PFD on.

Waquoit is about as much of a lock as any place I can think of. Plenty of action to please kid and adult alike. Sluggos, bucktail jigs, small poppers (Creek Chub, Gibbs, or Atom), and metals are all good.

Merrimack has been up and down since May, but good lately. I'll probably make an appearance there later in the week to see what all the fuss is about ;-);

I agree with Steve...6" Sluggos in white, grey or olive on a jig head will do the trick. Be sure to bite off about 1/4 inch of the sluggo before you put the jig head through it. They are the most effective way that I know of to catch lots (not necessarily big) of bass.
