Just returned from my second annual vinyard trip, (took a 21 regulator from Fairfield Ct to Oak Bluffs) and though the weather was stupendous, I have to summarize that last year was a better one. But the fishing was just in different places. The weeds around Wasque are horrible. Most people know that. It makes drifting eels, or trolling parachutes pretty difficult. And, right around the point, the big blues were nailing eels, souring our prospects for bass. (that spot was hot last year, despite the 100 degree heat, where we landed 10 bass mid day, some over 40 inches.) If you hit the rips farther off the island, the bass are there. They are just not too big. Very few keepers. If you go even farther out, the blues are easy, and I suppose if you know where to look, the bigger bass hide.
The real joy of the week occurred down around Gay head and Squibnocket. Both very hot. We casted up onto the beach almost to land bass down in Squib land, and did very well. The bass were dispersed all over the place. We chased birds for hours. You had to be there right when the fish were busting though, to land anything. Sometimes a tough job. But drifting the coast landed you several of those opportunities. Those were bigger bass averaging about 33 38 inches. Then over around Gay head, going out to the bouy, big schools of blues and bass were dispersed, but not very large. No keepers, all around 25 -30 inches. Fun though. Good fly rod action here. Plenty of time to land in the frenzy.
Took the boat home on Saturday, a little breezy, but no problems. Some might think thats nuts, but if you time it right, keep a close eye on the weather, and not really have a time clock to be forced too, you can do it. Don't forget to stop at the bass fishng club/Inn on Cuttyhunk and have some breakfast. That was as good as the fishing off its coast. The views couldn't be beat either. You missed a good time Pedro. Burke, grab a tuna, will yah? Seano out.
