I will be travelling to the Azores towards the end of July. Does anyone know if there is flyfishing there and if so for what types of fish. Any information on fish, flies, or gear would be greatly appreciated.

I have been on Sao Miguel during 2 weeks in Aug-Sep. I brought my flyrod but never unpacked it. Flyfishing from the shore is not viable, due to the steep volcanic nature of the coast. Possibly spinfishing would give some results ... not sure though. I doubt.

Fishing is done from boat, trolling for big game. Blue and White Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Bluefin, Big eye, and Yellowfin tuna. Most operators seem to be located on Faial. There are some operators on Sao Miguel. Incidental catches include Bluefish, Dorado, Wahoo and several smaller tuna species.

Freshwater flyfishing: forget about it.

Thanks for your answer! I plan to visit Sau Miguel in late august this year. It’s hard forgetting the freshwater fishing since I find trout-info on the internet, but with few or no details. But since this is also a honeymoon-trip perhaps it is wise not to spend all days flyfishing alone :)

August is a nice time to visit the Azores.

I guess that you plan to stay on Sao Miguel all the time. Where will you stay? In Ponta Delgada, the main town? Other location? Which hotel?

One thing that you you simply must do -- unless you hate sitting in an open infatable boat in the open sea is to join one of the whale watching safaris that depart twice daily from the marina. There are several operators. I can recommend Futurismo, they were professional and friendly.
