EZ Shape tips

Can anyone give me some tips on how to get EZ Shape material smooth? I was tying some Sand Eels last night with EZ Shape and was having a hard time getting a consistant body shape. I got close spreading it with a bodkin. Will coating the body with epoxy even it out. I don't use this material too often.
