I am an avid striped bass and blue shark fly rodder living in Maine. I will be on my honeymoon visiting Sanibel Island from Sept 12-18th and would greatly appreciate any fishing location advice. I will be primarily shorebound but might rent a boat or canoe for a day. I plan on bringing a pair of 10wts with floating and intermediate line and a medium spinning outfit. Where might my best chances be of catching a fish from shore, as well as information on where I might want to launch from if I rent a canoe or small boat. Any information regarding flies and tackle would also be appreciated.

Thanx!

I live in NH. Have home in Longboat Key. usually down ther several weeks in the fall. I do not know much about Sanibel Island, but look for places to wade that have some current, and do not forget the grass. All species will hang there. Incoming tide usually the best for wading has been my expeience.

Clousers work well, chart/white, tan/black. White poppers, any brown shrimp looking flies. Spinning any twitch bait, brown jigs, tipped with plastic, gold spoon. dont forget zara spook. This selection will catch snook, reds, trout, flounder, grouper, and if lucky a small poon.

A 7 or 8wt should be good unless you are looking for the big stuff. Floating line with clear tip works well for me. A sinking striper line is good for dredging in deep water. Good luck with the fishing and honeymoon.

Hi Mac, I'm from germany and also spent my honeymoon at Sanibel. Besides my wife which was already hooked, I caught a nice 36 inch Snook. For fishing: Canoe rental at Tarpon Bay; target low tide, on the right side of the bay look for tailing redfish in the shallows, on the left hand side, cast along the mangroves for Snook. Fishing from the beaches for Snook at Blind Pass (along the stone wall), Bowmans(the sticks) and Sanibel Fishing Pier; best at night and early morning. Fly: white/chart. Clouser
