Hi All,
At the show I noticed a variety of mini/micro lamps used for fly tying. Any opinions on the different types and models?
Halogen verses fluorescent?
Pedestal verses Clamp on?
Different manufacturers. Prices?
Thanks in advance.

Sully,
Just a FYI....I was at the Trading Post yesterday. There was a micro lamp arm attachment ( by Thompson?) for about 37 bucks. No lamp of course. Also a small vise which I may purchase later this week.
What was that about lunch? :);

I use a regular halogen desk lamp (pedestal) It's plenty bright and works just fine. I suppose you could invest in a special one or even a "true color" style, but I'm not sure its necessary. I think a regular halogen desk lamp would work just fine, but thats just my two cents and I've been wrong before.

For $10 you can go to Staples and get a clamp on, spring loaded adjustable arm lamp. Stick a 60 watt bulb in and bingo, a real bright lamp that can be put away in 10 seconds if necessary. I have a small high intensity desk lamp but the $10 one I bought at Staples is much better. I can get it up and out of the way, get great illumination and it doesn't shine in my eyes. I have a cobblers bench I bought at the Mill Store at Cordage Park(North Plymouth) for $20. I shortened the legs a bit and it is a great tying bench. The raised back accommodates all of my threads on on a row of nails driven into the top surface. A full shelf underneath holds all of the other materials in mini milk crates. Two people can tie on it at one time.

Hi Pete,
That bench sounds like a real nice setup.
FWIW I bought a Westinghouse halogen desklamp model W4300 for $21.99 at OfficeMax. It's not a micro more of a mini. It has the features I wanted. A pedestal base, adjustable goose neck and a 20W halogen bulb. Man it's a whole new world.
A point of note they also carried one that was a clamp on model for about $43.00 that had a swing away magnifier.Real nice. If it was a pedestal base I would have bought it in a heartbeat.
Thanks again for the help.
