This past weekend there were a good many albacore caught for the few people fly fishing. I had two anglers come into the fly shop Sunday that bought a bunch of crystal copperheads and chartreuse and white Clousers. I asked them if they were catching the large Spanish mackerel and they told me that thats what they had gone after, but they crossed the Cape shoals and got into the alberts pretty good on the eastside. The fish were in the 8 to 12 lb. range. This is definatly a very good sign! Capt. Dave also had a charter on Sunday and saw a few cores in the Beaufort Inlet. They caught at least one core and maybe more.

A crystal copperhead fly is a fly that Capt. Randy Hamilton from Charleston S.C. came up with. I do not have a picture but I will try and describe it to you. It is tied on a #1 Gamakatsu SC15 hook using 3/16 dumbell eyes like a clouser minnow. The body is made from crystal pearl chenille, the tail is crystal pearl flashabou and pearl krystal flash. The Spanish mackerel and albacore really like this fly. It is about 3 inches long and you can trim it to whatever size baitfish the fish are feeding on.

CaptJOE:
Are the Crystal Copperhead flies available at local fly shops in the area (i.e. could you point me in the right direction)?
Thanks,
Rick Vandenberg

Past years I have stayed at Harkers Island or Crazy Joes. this year we were late in making reservations and are staying in Morehead City and going out from Beufort Inlet.
Question is: Should we power down to outermost light and Harkers island inlet or will we find good fishing outside of Beufort Inlet, either north or south of the inlet. Will be there the first weekend in November.
Thanks for your experience.

Norm:
I have only been there once before, but I am also going down again the first weekend in November. If i remember correctly, your 'milk run' should consist of Beaufort inlet, the hook, and the core banks. I would certanily defer to Captjoe if he has a different opinion.

Hi Norm,
I would fish out of Beaufort Inlet! For the last few years most of the guides and fly fishermen have been working just about 2 miles out of Beaufort Inlet behind the Trawlers and east of the shipping channel in the mornings and then working down toward the Cape Lookout area later in the morning. Some mornings you will have to run to the Cape, but most mornings there are plenty of alberts right in Beaufort Inlet. It will save you a 9 mile run!

Thanks, Capt. Joe. I appreciate the suggestions. I'll look forward to your reports as the time gets closer. Also need to stop into the shop and pick up some guaranteed flies! 8);
