Hit the "spots" early am looking for albert to show up against my better judgement. Out of the harbor by 6:15am and back in by 8:00am to pick up fresh bagels and muffins for the family....let's just say that all this morning was good for was to put the big cat through some paces in a 15-20mph west wind and 4 foot chop.

Took the family out to hike the Fort Hill area in Eastham and hang out at Nauset Beach late in the day......wow, flat calm seas brought back some unreal memories from late June off Nauset inlet.

My 9 year old son insisted on bringing his ugly stick along and he got me to commit to stopping at any pond we saw on the drive home for a few casts. Well, somewhere in barnstable between Route 6 and 28 I spotted a pond along the road where he looked like he could cast the shore line. I never saw this body of water before in my life.....I tied on a spinner bait and handed him the rod. He waded in and on his 2nd cast a big swirl engulfed the area where his spinner bait had just entered the water and his rod bends over bigtime, followed by a big fish totally clearing the water from head to tail. I resisted every urge to "help" him and he fought that fish really well. It tail walked and jumped like crazy.

Before this I had never even seen a smallmouth up close and personal. We took some crude pics with an obsolete cell phone so sorry about the quality of the pic but this seemed to me to be a trophy smallmouth for these parts.

With the sun fading fast we packed it up and headed back to camp.

Back at it tomorrow morning looking for albert.

Snook have been on Florida anglers minds ever since the cold snap last January caused the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission to make the regs “Catch & Release” last spring. Well, the FWC has met and effective September 17 the season will reopen with a one fish per day limit with a daily bag of one fish between 28 and 32 inches on Florida’s East Coast only. That includes coastal and inland waters including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River.

Fishing on the Gulf Coast will remain “Catch & Release” at least for the present time. FWC biologists advised that while gulf coast snook were severely impacted by the cold weather, Atlantic coast snook fared much better.
You can also check on the latest regulations and even buy your license on line by going to:
It is being held in place by the three little posts on the gear. Oddly enough, the drag still seems to function normally. Anyone else have this problem? What is the cause, or is it just old age and too many albies? Any easy solution? Or do I send it down to Tibor and if so, what should I expect to pay? Thank you.

Growing up in CA, I never got to see a hurricane, so with the weather forecasts predicting the end of the world, I figured I better get one last fishing trip in. I left the yak at home and grabbed the big surf stick and a small bag of lures.

When I got to the water, it didn't seem too bad, a little rain, not too much wind, but the waves were breaking and it was a little bumpy out. That didn't stop the fishermen. People were fishing everywhere, and some of the most hardcore Boston fishermen were out--one guy was out in his yak (and I was regretting not bringing mine!)

The first spot I hit was a bust, not a hit in an hour and a half of fishing so I moved on. The next spot was very slow, but I got a few taps here and there from small fish and couldn't keep one on the hook. I considered downsizing to a 10" plastic, but stuck with the 13" hoping that there was at least one pig out there. If there was, I didn't find her! After an hour of casting, I finally got fish on back to back casts. After that I picked up a few more fish. I ended up with 5 fish with the biggest at 35" and only one was short. No hits for the last hour of fishing, so I left.

I was disappointed by the hurricane, those 20 mph winds were just not that impresssive. There was one downpour that was amazing, I don't think that I have ever been out when it rained so hard. It felt like I was underwater--fortunately I was wearing a drytop with my waders, so it didn't really matter.

It felt good to fishing standing up for a change! I hadn't used the big spinning rod yet this season, so it was fun to do something different.
