Oct. & RI
I'm lucky enough to be spending a long weekend at Hammersmith Farm in Rhode Island this coming October (20-22). I believe it is at the mouth of the Narragansett. I'm wondering if anyone has fished this area from shore and could point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

RE: Oct. & RI
Mid to late October the past two years in RI has been pretty much "can't miss." I don't know where Hammersmith is, but just about any breachway and beach between Narragansett and Westerly is productive for stripers, blues, hickory shad, and tiny tunas at that time. Forced to pick one place, I'd go to Quonochontaug/East Beach first and if nothing is happening simply hit every beach/breachway west or east of there until you see action. Birds are a good indicator of activity, but not the only one. Sometimes a place is just loaded with bait and the birds haven't caught up to it yet.
Any more specifics you need, e-mail me. -bd <img src="http://world.std.com/~bdowning/fishing_lg_wte.gif"> |
RE: Oct. & RI
Start by contacting the SaltwaterEdge Fly Shop in Newport www.saltwateredge.com). The shop can provide you with go locations around Newport.
Beaches like Second Beach are good, Breton Point which is just down Ocean Drive from Hammersmith can be good if the wind tolerable for fly casting. I'd recommend taking spinning gear along with your fly rod in case the wind is blowing. Enjoy the vacation |
