bait for alewives

Does anyone know if alewives would take any bait? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Sabiki rigs.

I was wondering if non-artificial lures, such as squid etc. would work in areas that are quite shallow for rigs. Any ideas?

you could theoretically throw a small (size 10 or 12) flashy fly on a floating line, that would probably get them, its basically a sabiki only one of the little guys on there. I really have never heard of people targeting alewifes with bait so can't really help you out there.

I only know of one guy who would use freeze-dried brine shrimp (aquarium store)...dumping them near the herring and then using a cast net when they were all balled up. The stuff these guys eat is soooooo small I dunno how you could bait them with a hook.
