going out of country with fly rod. Can I carry on rod and reel in case? what about flies.?

I've had no problem carrying rods but on the way back from British Columbia a couple of years ago they made me check the flies when I came back into the US. Since it was considered a second bag they charged me for it too. On trips to Chile, Belize, and Bahamas, all fairly recent, it was fine both ways.

I have a four piece case with rel attached? should I remove the reel and carry only rod on plane?

I have never had a problem with rods and reels within the US or going out. The problem has been coming back. Usually no problem with rods but ofter a problem with reels.

Where are you going?

If concerned about issue coming back...
Pack your spools with line and all flies in checked bag. take reels with no spools and line for carry-on. Should be OK then.

Guatemala & Costa Rica are very strict about what goes on the plane.

I'm based in CO and just got back from the Bahamas. We hand carried all rods (10), all reels (8 fly / 3 spin), and all flies (far more than any group needs for a ten day trip). TSA didn't care in the least, neither did the Bahamians. There was a sign at the airport in Abaco stating that conch shells could not be carried on, but fishing gear doesn't seem to pose a problem.

Mexico seems to have a thing against line on reels but even they seem to be easing a bit based on my last trip down there.

Yes I saw a show on tv were in Mexico they made Larry Dalhberg take all new braid off his reels!Lots of cash couple hundred bucks he said!

As stated tsa are very lax on what fishing tackle you can take on a plane with you. If you are flying outside of mainland usa or it's islands be very carefull regards what you can take onto the plane with you as you could have a long walk back to checkin to put your rods and reels into the hold. My advice check it all better to to be safe than sorry. for example quantas and Virgin Alantic no fishing gear allowed in cabin.
