I literally just watched an episode of Spanish Fly I recorded from earlier today and then popped on RT only to learn of Jose's passing.
I watched him for years and appreciated his love of the sport and the environment. A true champion of all things sportfishing, RIP.

I'll miss him and his show, what a shame. We met him a couple times on the Vineyard when he was there to film with guide Mo Flaherty. We all shared a good natured laugh at Larry's when we asked him if he wanted to come fishing with us - we'd get him on some real bass, we said. He was a self-made man, sad to see anyone go, especially a doer like Jose.

What you saw on TV was what you got in person. When I worked with Capt. Tom Mleczko on the Priscilla J. he fished with us in the Havlicek Tournament. I remember watching him throw a fly (bluefish popper) at least 100 feet with a 9 weight. The guy was fun, funny and real. I picked up some good tips, just fishing with him for a day. He returned to Nantucket and spent a couple of days doing a show with Tom's on his boat. I remember him telling me that Flip Pallot who at the time was a banker, approved a loan for his first boat. He was in his teens at the time. A huge loss as a person and an angler.
