Boat Surveyor

Since my last post, when I was interested in an aluminum rowboat, I've set my sights a little higher and may be getting a 13' Boston Whaler for my kids.

Here's the (possibly dumb) question -- the one I'm looking at is almost 20 years old, and I plan to see it in person this weekend. For a boat this size should I bother with the expense of a marine surveyor?

If not, the thing I was going to make sure to check was that the transom doesn't flex. Any suggestions of what else to look for would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Whaler's are foam filled and it's not uncommon for the foam to be water logged on the older boats. Surveyors use a moisture meter to check for water intrusion.

Waterlogged hulls can be an issue - google "chainsaw whaler" and you'll find a story of a waterlogged 13 hull that weighed something like 1000 lbs. rather than the 350 lbs. it weighed when it left the factory.

A surveyor will also use a plastic headed hammer and rap it against the hull all over the boat. It should sound sharp. If it sounds muted that is a soft spot which is either waterlogged or delaminated or both.
