Montauk Sportfishing Report 8/22/16

I finally got my computer back from the hospital after a week and it still doesnít work right. HELP!

Anybody in Montauk who wants to catch a tuna (yellowfin) knows where to go and it isnít on a long distance trip. Itís 20 miles south to 700/700. It doesnít look fishy Ė no fish jumping around or birds working - only some scattered pick birds, but thatís where they are. But, they arenít very big. In fact you should probably make sure and measure the ones you catch, but they taste good.

Shark fishing isnít real good right now and you stand a chance of not catching one, except if you are ballsy enough to fish around Cartwright where there are schools of bunker and occasional threshers.

The striped bass fishing is getting more difficult. Most of the charters are getting their lmits, but it is nail biting fishing. There just arenít that many bass around and they all tend to congregate in one spot and all the boats have to fish that one spot. In years past you couls always find a couple of spots with fish on them and you could fish alone, but those days are past until the bass get more numerous.

Bottom fishing is fine and in addition to the fluke porgies and seabass there are lots of sea robins around to keep you busy between the good fish and some triggers as well. Hereís a hint on cleaning the triggers who have skins like sand paper. Insert the knife under the skin blade side out and cut the skin all around the fillet. Then grab the skin with a pair of needle nose pliers and rip it off.
