Peanut Bunker and a Missed Blitz

For the last week or so I have seen schools of Peanut Bunker off the beaches of Sandwich and Barnstable. Although the Stripers have been feeding I have not seen blitzís in close. I picked up a few Stripers but snagged more Peanut Bunker. The biggest Striper I got was about 22 inches. One evening there were multiple huge schools of Peanut Bunker but once again little Striper activity. I started using a small black gurgler and picked up multiple mackerel.

Last evening I got to a spot that had a bad odor. Rotting Peanut Bunker lined the high water mark.

I missed the blitz.

Twice this past week where I"ve fished the peanuts were in quite thick. One time the fish were busting close to the beach with birds working; the other time, the bunker were huddling close to the jetty, and just dimpling the surface, with no bird or striper action. And both times I got no hits, with many changes of flies. . .hate when that happens!

Yesterday I was in Barnstable harbor and the bass were chasing the PB all over the place. Small blitzes lasting a couple minutes and they would move, around the moorings, around the islands, in the flooded grass. I hooked a couple decent fish to either loose them or break off. Largest landed was 28".

Bob,
Since there seems to be a consistent late season match-the-hatch problem with bass on peanut bunker.......what fly (or lure) were you using?

The fly I used was a white bulky fly with some pick in it. Worked best when thrown into the heat of the action. (fly was a raffle prize) One the spinning rod, basically white plastics in the 4-6 inch range.. Sluggos, shads, paddle tails. If I had a crease fly, I'm sure that would have worked well.

Lots of bait and working birds in the Cotuit/ Hyannis area over the last couple of days. I was using a small bulky white fly with some peacock herl attempting to imitate peanut bunker. I snagged peanut bunker but also a 4 or 5 inch silver side. Got a few small Stripers but not what I was looking for...False Albacore.
