Fly Box Problem Solved

As posted earler, I have been looking for a inexpensive, water-tight, fly box large enough to hold SW flies.

Thanks to several replies I found some, but the were a bit pricy, like $40 each. I need at least 2.

So I made the following. I bought a Pelican 1040 case for $18 at REI. I added 1/8" thick 2-sided foam tape to hold firm foam pads in place on the two inside surfaces. This worked perfect. They float, are water-tight, and the seals can be replaced as needed.

Here is a link to the REI stores in MA (all around the Boston/Metro West area).

http://clients.mapquest.com/rei/mqin...=900&link=find

They may not have the boxes in stock. You can get the other materials at most home improvement centers and craft stores.

Ray,

Try preslitting you foam with a sharp x-acto, it should still hold your flies securely and will last a lot longer. Those boxes look great!

just don't let a hint of moisture get in that foam or you'll wake up to rusty hooks...i know it is "closed cell" foam etc etc but I learned about it the hard way - putting not 100% dried off flies back in my 'watertight' box

Ray.

You should have added the cost of gas from Newton to Boston for round trip.

My fly box cost me almost nothing and it is practical. I have several different fly boxes but none of them are perfect so I used video casset tape case with foam glued on both sides. It is good for bigger flys. For water proof I put them in the ziploc bag.

For small flys, I just use several different ziploc bags for different sizes and style. I love ziploc bags because it is visable and no space wasted because it gets only as thick as your flys.

For small flys I also use a 1/2" foam, cut to little less than ziploc bag size and stick flys on both sides of the foam and put them in the ziploc bag. It is visible and flexible to fit your body contour.

Way to go Don! You and me the Dollar Store Guys - A step above Wal-Mart and Michaels!

Zip lock bags rule! I like the video tape box idea!. I just gave away about thirty of them that were left over from a consulting bidness I used to own. I'll have to go beg a couple of them back from my duck hunting bud the private eye!

Ray,

Loved your idea at the begining of the thread but Don D Kim has made me see the light! Amen!

Keep on thinking! One of these days we are all going to be rich!

I met a girl once who said Fly Fishing is Martha Stewart for guys. I hate to say it, because I'm as guilty as the next guy, but she kinda had a point.
