holy mackerel

The macks were around this morning in the canal and the stripers seemed happy that they were there. There were sporadic scuffles of stripers and macs throughout the time I was there. I don't fish the canal that often, and when I saw the size of the fish's tale as it was inhaling my sp minnow, I said to myself, "that's a big tail, that's a good fish". So as the fish started to take my line, with authority, it almost took me with it. I was pulled forward and slightly off balance from the take, and in a matter of a few seconds I got my feet planted between some rocks, jammed the rod butt into my body and ...off to the races. All went fine after that and the 43"er (1st keeper of the year) was released to go eat more mackerel...I will remember that take and hopefully be ready the next time...It's always something!

Nice catch, I would have fallen on the rocks and become fish bait.
