Mt. Hope Bay Bonito's

Fished in the upper bay (Mt. Hope) in the A.M. treated to fish breaking bait on the surface all over the place. Assumed they were blue fish. Could not hook up on fly or poppers despite chasing breaking fish for about an hour. One other guy on another boat hooked up and lo' and behold it was a Bonito, is this unusual in the upper bay? I am not sure why I think it is, but I assumed Bonito would not venture this far inshore. Pardon my ignorance, is this unusual?

I work with a guy who fishes from shore at Stone Bridge. He claims False Albacore are being caught there. I live in Fall River and -well the idea of funny fish being so close has got me psyched! Mind revealing where these fish were?Del Thurston

RE: Mt. Hope Bay Bonito's

Sorry, should have added more detail. They were breaking between 100 and 1000 yards off the town beach in Swansesa. This is where the Coles, and Lee's river dump into Mt. Hope Bay. The Coles has been LOADED with peanut bunker for the last two weeks, it's a feast for snapper blues and schoolie bass, the bigger fish often find their way in too... I was heading out when the blitz started and decided to stay right at the mouth of the Cole's... they were finicky I must warn you, they wanted nothing I had to offer, first time I have ever run a popper through a school of breaking fish and come up empty every time. The tide was rising and the action occured between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. lots of birds working the water as well. good luck

RE: Mt. Hope Bay Bonito's

I hooked into a False Albacore saturday around 5:00PM headed back up towards sommersett. I was using a whit and black Fin-S-Fish (5") with a 1/2 oz. white jig head. Had to put it right into the middle of the breaking fish to get them to hit. They were breaking between the two channels headed to the sakonnet from Mt. Hope bay.

One of the guys I was fishing with had one up to the boat following a 1 1/2" silver rattling plug.

Good Luck
joe

Thank you for the incredible detail of the location of the fish you got into. I am originally from Somerset, I can't remember funny fish ever making it this far up the bay! From now on I'll hit Mt Hope bay weekdays, and the cape on weekends. Thanks again-Del Thurston

RE: Mt. Hope Bay Bonito's

I went to the Stone bridge area in the upper bay hoping I would avoid the predicted rain. Did not! Put my inflatable in at a ramp right under the bridge for Rt 24. The propriator of the ramp confirmed that there are lots of FA around. The weather was pretty dismal. I am looking forward to hitting the area tommorrow. I am starting to notice that hallucinations are one of the symtoms of the illness I'm afflicted with-tunoid fever. It's not uncommon for me to see splashing, and/or jumping baitfish shorly after getting out on the water. Seems to be getting worse.
