Am planning a trip to Montauk on Columbus Day weekend. Need info on ramps and places to stay (cheap) in the Westerly RI area. Will be launching a 22' Mako. Any info and or suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. First trip to that area.

I am going that weekend as well, trailering my boat there. This will be my first time but am going with a friend that lived there for quite a while, I can try to get info for you. Send me your email address.

RE: Montauk Trip

Just noticed that you wanted Westerly, not Montauk. Maybe a wise choice avoiding road traffic. Sorry,I don't have any Westerly info.

At Montauk that weekend, there should be lots of albies, bass, blues and of course boats.

RE: Montauk Trip

Thanks anyway. I did print out your extensive list for Montauk though. I'm sure this won't be my only trip and that list will sure come in handy. Looking forward to next weekend even though I know it will be crowded. It's the only weekend that I can make it this year so I have to give it a shot.

Westerly Info

"Am planning a trip to Montauk on Columbus Day weekend. Need info on ramps and places to stay (cheap) in the Westerly RI area. Will be launching a 22' Mako. Any info and or suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. First trip to that area."

There are a bunch of inexpensive motels along RT. 1, both in Westerly and further into CT: Pawcatuck, Stonington and then towards Mystic. A search on Google for "motels in Stonington, CT" will bring up a good list. I also recommend launching at Barn Island boat ramp, again on Rt.1, very near the Pawcatuck, CT town line. It's well suited to your size boat, and opens into Little Narragansett Bay, at the mouth of the Pawcatuck River. Head south-southeast from the launch site to pick up the channel that runs along side Sandy Island. Once you turn the corner at Sandy Point, it's almost a straight shot south to Montauk Light, after passing Napatree Point then taking a little dog leg to the west around the last of the Watch Hill reefs at Wippacasset Rock, between the eastern end of Fisher's Island. The run to Montauk is about 17 nautical miles or so as measured from that channel mouth. Just check your charts, you'll see the areas I'm referring to.

Once you get to Montauk, be prepared for the usual zoo of throttle jockeys who go busting up on pods of fish at 30 kts., of course scattering them all to hell in the process. I find the best method out there is to set up a drift, given the current direction, either on the Shagwong Reef side of the light or around to the south side, while just standing at the ready and make your casts if and when the fish show. You'll get just as many shots if not more as the guys who go blasting all over the place. (Resist the temptation to go zooming after the birds and the bait and the busts yourself; chances are the other wingnuts will put 'em down and they'll pop up right alongside your drift.)The waters out there can be a little steep and snotty if the wind's up, as it's predicted to be this w/e (and be doubly sure you and your hull can make the run, because that stretch can become some big, ugly water in a blow), so be prepared and brace yourself well. If the fish are there and on the chew and competitive, you'll have a blast.

If you can't make the run due to weather, hang in there because there's a hell of a lot of great fishing to be had around Watch Hill itself, on down to the Race (talk about ugly water in a blow...). Just mind those reefs: either stay inside them or out, but unless you know the waters pretty well, don't try to cross them unless you have a few spare lower units you're dying to run through before ordering a few more. Watch the other boats and pay attention to your sounder. Good luck!
